CJ Officiates at ILI Leadership Retreat

The Hon. the Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Bart M. Katureebe, on Thursday  September 6, 2018 presided over a one-day Leadership Retreat, organized to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the International Law Institute.

Speaking at the occasion held at Serena Lake Victoria Hotel at Kigo, under the theme: "Ethical Leadership in Africa", the Chief Justice said ethics is a form of leadership in which individuals demonstrate conduct for the common good that is acceptable and appropriate in every area of life.

He said the key elements of ethical leadership were leading by example, focusing on and championing the importance of ethics and effective communication.

"Ethical leadership is thus the bedrock upon which good governance lays," said Hon. Justice Katureebe.

"The key principles of good governance include adherence to the rule of law,transparency and accountability efficiency and effectiveness, equity and inclusiveness, which can only be realized in the face of ethical leadership."

The Chief Justice suggested that recruitment of judges should not only be based on one attaining a degree in Law but looking into an individual's known integrity.

The Chief Justice called for conscious and collective goal by individuals at all levels and as institutions, if ethical leadership is to grow.

The event was attended by a cross-section of eminent personalities from the Justice Section, diplomatic corp, government and civil society, among others.
